Knee Injuries in the Workplace
Knee injuries whilst at work
Work-related knee injuries are not uncommon, and can be caused by physical stress, overuse, or accidents.
- Physical stress and wear: Knee injuries can result from repetitive movements that put stress on the knee joint. For example, a worker who regularly walks over uneven ground, squats, or bears weight on their knees may be at risk of developing knee pain or other injuries.
- Workplace accidents: Accidents in the workplace can also cause serious knee injuries. For example, a worker who is involved in a fall, is struck by an object, or twists their knee suddenly may suffer a tear in a ligament or tendon, or a fracture to the kneecap or other bones.
- Motor vehicle or car accidents: Blunt force trauma to the knee during a car accident can also cause serious knee injuries.
- Slip, trip, or fall: Falls are a leading cause of injury in Australia, and can also cause knee injuries. Falls from significant heights are a common cause of fracture-type knee injuries.
Below are some tips for preventing work-related knee injuries:
- Use proper lifting techniques. When lifting heavy objects, bend your knees and keep your back straight.
- Take breaks when you are working in a position that puts stress on your knees.
- Use knee pads or other protective gear when working in environments where there is a risk of falls or other accidents.
- Strengthen your leg muscles. Strong leg muscles can help to support your knees and prevent injuries.
If you have any concerns about your risk of developing a work-related knee injury, talk to your employer or a health professional.
If you have suffered a knee injury at work, it is important to seek medical attention as soon as possible. You may also be eligible to file a workers' compensation claim.
